ALS in Operation: Leadership Insight from the Ramp

This month, Maxie Kosczug, Business Unit Manager of Lufthansa Auxiliary Services at GLC, visited our Aircraft Loading Supervisor (ALS) teams in Frankfurt and Munich. Accompanying them on the ramp, she observed how every step, from bulk loading, fuelling, catering upload and cargo pallet checks to safety walkarounds, load instruction readbacks, and pushback coordination, is interconnected to deliver safe, on-time departures.

In Frankfurt, Maxie joined one of our ALS colleagues from the Belgrade office, and in Munich, another from our Cape Town office. Both are part of GLC’s ALS programme, seconded to hubs during peak periods to reinforce operations with hands-on expertise. Their presence highlights how ALS colleagues strengthen ground processes while working hand in hand with ramp operations and local station teams.

Empowering Our People: Leadership in Action

ALS is not only about operational support – it’s also a platform for professional growth and leadership development. Across our network, colleagues taking on Aircraft Loading Supervisor assignments demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and commitment to safety.

One such example comes from an ALS colleague recognised internally for demonstrating exceptional leadership during a deployment. They:

• Enhanced team performance with hands-on insights during turnaround
• Strengthened communication between ramp operations and our load control centres
• Partnered with GLC Team Managers to resolve operational challenges proactively
• Demonstrated leadership, ownership, and responsibility

Their performance resulted in safer operations, stronger teams, and more resilient performance — clear proof of the ALS programme’s value for both partners and colleagues.

Benefits for Airline Partners

For our airline partners, the ALS service provides:

• Operational continuity during seasonal peaks
• Additional on-site expertise to support local teams
• Seamless coordination with GLC’s remote load control centres
• A reinforced safety culture driven by experienced colleagues
• Flexible workforce scalability without the need for seasonal recruitment and training cycles – avoiding the challenges of overstaffing after the peak period and ensuring resources are right-sized throughout the year

This combination of reliability and adaptability ensures smoother turnarounds and consistent performance, even during high-demand periods.

Benefits for GLC Teams

For colleagues, ALS assignments are more than deployments — they are opportunities to grow. Exposure to new operational environments, international stations, and real-time challenges enhances technical expertise, builds leadership skills, and fosters cultural awareness. Many return to their LCA roles as stronger coaches and role models for their teams, contributing to GLC’s ongoing culture of excellence.

Conclusion

The ALS service demonstrates the best of what GLC stands for: safety, reliability, and collaboration. It benefits airlines by strengthening operations and empowering colleagues through development and recognition. Together, these outcomes ensure that GLC continues to deliver where it matters most – on the ground, for our partners and our people worldwide.
