GLC Stands in Solidarity for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

On 25 November, GLC joined organisations around the world in marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual United Nations campaign that runs until 10 December. The initiative raises global awareness of gender-based violence (GBV), one of the most pervasive human rights challenges affecting women, children and vulnerable communities across the world.

This year, our Cape Town teams stood together in solidarity, wearing black and purple and observing 15 minutes of silence to honour survivors, remember those who have been lost, and reflect on how each of us can help build safer workplaces and societies.

About the 16 Days of Activism Campaign

Established in 1991 by UN Women and observed internationally, the 16 Days campaign begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) and concludes on Human Rights Day (10 December). Its purpose is to spark awareness, drive education, and inspire collective action against all forms of GBV.

Each year, governments, NGOs, corporations and communities participate through awareness events, advocacy campaigns and symbolic displays of solidarity.

The South African Context and the Purple Movement

In South Africa, the 2025 theme is:

“Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls working together to end Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF)”.

The country also continues to see strong support for the Purple Movement, led by advocacy groups such as Women For Change. Over recent weeks, social media feeds, classrooms, offices and outdoor spaces across the country have turned purple – a powerful reminder of the national commitment to addressing GBV and the urgent need for meaningful change.

This movement has amplified voices across the continent and continues to push for greater accountability, visibility and community support.

GLC’s Commitment to Safety, Dignity and Respect

At GLC, we recognise that safety culture extends beyond operational environments. A workplace grounded in respect, dignity, and care enables people to feel secure, valued and supported.

Our participation in the campaign reflects our commitment to:

  • creating safe and respectful workspaces

  • supporting awareness of global and local GBV challenges

  • encouraging collective responsibility

  • standing with survivors and honouring those affected

The 15-minute silence held across our Cape Town operation served as a moment to pause, reflect and acknowledge the social responsibility we all share in promoting positive change within our communities.

Why This Matters to Us

As an international aviation services organisation, GLC is part of a global community. Gender-based violence transcends borders and cultures, and campaigns like these highlight the importance of cross-industry and cross-country solidarity.

By standing together, raising awareness and actively engaging in these conversations, we contribute to long-term change — both within our own organisation and in the broader society we operate in.

Thank You to Our Team

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all GLC colleagues who participated, showed solidarity and helped create a meaningful moment of unity. Your support strengthens our commitment to building a respectful, inclusive and safe working environment.
